The Details – Project Progress

Progress

So far we have used Scaniverse to scan the entire two levels of the stadium. This included capturing the locker room areas, hallways, and other interior spaces that make up the facility. The goal of these scans is to create an interactive digital model of the stadium that allows viewers to explore the space virtually and understand how the facility is structured. The scanning process involved walking through the stadium and capturing hundreds of overlapping images so that Scaniverse could reconstruct the environment into a navigable 3D model.

We have also found a plethora of old team photos and photos of the stadium over the years. These images help document how the program and the physical stadium have evolved over time. By comparing photos from different decades, we can see changes in uniforms, facilities, and the overall growth of the football program.

Finally, we have talked to coaches and alumni who have insight on the changes over the years. These conversations have helped us better understand the significance of certain artifacts and traditions within the program, and they provide helpful context for some of the historical materials we have found.

Problems (and proposed solutions)

One challenge we ran into involved the scanning settings within Scaniverse. We initially tried using the Splat mode on Scaniverse but quickly realized that it was much easier and more effective to use the Mesh option indoors. The Mesh option allowed us to capture the indoor environment more clearly and produced a model that was easier to export and embed into our project site.

Tools and techniques

We have primarily used Scaniverse to generate the 3D scans of the stadium. In addition, we have used the Carleton Archives to locate historical photos and documents related to the football program. We have also relied on our own primary sources, including conversations with coaches and other people connected to the program who have firsthand knowledge of its history.

Deliverables

The project is very much on track with the timeline we proposed initially. We have already completed a large portion of the scanning and have begun organizing the historical images and materials that will be included on the final project site.

Personal messages

Tyler: I took the lead on scanning the upstairs portion of the stadium as well as finding information through primary sources such as the head football coach, Tom Journell.

Rye Storrs: I scanned the entire downstairs of the stadium, including the weight room. I also walked around the stadium and collected pictures of artifacts that explain some of the program history, such as the Goat Trophy and the Book of (K)Nowledge.

Chase: I helped find pictures in the stadium, more specifically within some of the offices. These pictures were of past teams and players that had a lot of historical significance. I also found additional images within the Carleton Archives.

  1. Great work so far on progressing through your project! You all covered a lot of ground, and I am excited to see everything you continue to accomplish. I would love to hear more about the process of scanning entire floors of the stadium, as it seemed difficult to get a very comprehensive scan of a house using the apps. I would be interested to know how that affected a much larger-scale scan. I also love the use of first-hand sources through interviewing!
