Willis Hall Timeline (1867 – Present)
This timeline shows some of the major events in the history of Willis Hall. The data comes mainly from the Carleton College webpage on Willis Hall history (https://www.carleton.edu/economics/overview/willis-history/) along with some images from the Carleton Archives as well. Much of the information on the site was originally written in longer paragraphs, so we cleaned it by paraphrasing and organizing them into shorter entries with dates and images as well.
We created the visualization with Flourish, because with it we are able to turn the information into an interactive timeline that can be embedded directly into our website.
In our project, the timeline mainly serves the purpose of an explanatory feature. It helps people viewing our site understand how Willis Hall has changed over time and gives some historical context before they explore the interactive models and tours of the building.
To make the timeline clearer, we kept the descriptions short and paired them with relevant images when possible. The format also makes it easy for users to scroll through and see how the building changed over time, both in function and structure. In terms of visual aspects, we kept the default Flourish color scheme, which maintains good contrast and readability for users, including those with certain types of colorblindness.
Wow, this is excellent work Ronan. I really want to take a second to appreciate how visually aesthetic and pleasing to the eye your timeline of Willis Hall is. Not only that, I am flabbergasted that Willis Hall has records that have lasted so long. I can only hope that I grow to an age where I live as long as Willis Hall, setting aside renovations! Ahaha.

Turning the longer paragraphs from the Carleton website into shorter entries with dates and images makes the information much easier for people to read and understand. Using Flourish for an interactive timeline is also a good choice because it lets users scroll through the history and see how the building has changed over time.
