Team Charter

Shared Values

Our team is committed to historical accuracy, meticulous interpretation, and thoughtful digital reconstruction. Because our project involves recreating Carl’s movement through 1930s Beijing based on archival photographs, we value precision in spatial analysis, responsible use of historical evidence, and transparency in handling uncertainty. We recognize that photographic records do not provide complete information, so we will clearly distinguish between documented fact and interpretive reconstruction. We also value collaboration grounded in respect, accountability, and equal participation.

Expectation

Each member is expected to contribute consistently to research, analysis, and production tasks. This includes identifying photographic details, verifying geographic and architectural information, and documenting sources used to justify map reconstruction decisions. Members should complete assigned work on schedule and communicate in advance if additional time or clarification is needed. During discussions, each person is expected to articulate their reasoning clearly, especially when proposing interpretations of location, direction, or movement.

Communication

We will use a shared Google Drive to store photographs, maps, and version-controlled documents. All interpretive decisions about Carl’s route or spatial positioning must be recorded in writing to preserve transparency. The team will meet at least once per week to review progress, compare interpretations, and resolve uncertainties related to visual evidence or historical geography. Timely responses to messages are expected to maintain workflow continuity.

Disagreement

Given the interpretive nature of reconstructing movement from historical photographs, disagreements may arise regarding geographic identification. When this occurs, members will base discussion on observable photographic evidence, historical maps, secondary sources, and logical spatial reasoning. Arguments should focus on methodological validity over personal preference. If consensus cannot be reached after thorough discussion, the team will adopt the interpretation best supported by documented evidence.

Responsibilities

Haochen – focus on historical research and verification of 1930s Beijing street layouts/ clean possible data

Jason – focus on ArcGIS georeferencing, spatial alignment of 1930s historical maps to modern coordinates, and developing the interactive web map.
