Overall, I thought this was definitely an interesting lab. Using the ArcGIS online platform in general was a fun way to use mapping as a guide to set up details of specific locations, and present to others specific locations that can hold meaning. For example, in my map which I linked at the top, I used the polygon tool to outline the places that I had been on campus in Carleton to symbolize how often I would go per week. What I found especially cool was that you could also change the colors, as well as outlines of your encirclement through this tool, which was a great help in distinguishing each building from others. In my map, called Brandon’s Common Places map, I used the colors of the rainbow as ordering to specify levels of how often I went somewhere each week. It started with red being the least amount of that building visited on campus, to purple being the greatest quantity of visits per week. In case there are discrepancies in our belief of the rainbow colors, these are the order that I believe them to be in, and consequently ranked my buildings after: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple. Moreover, I added two buildings I tend to find myself at throughout the week in this assignment, and those two buildings are Sayles-Hill Campus Center, and the Recreational Center.

In terms of all my locations, you can check them out HERE.

But in general, I feel ArcGIS is an excellent platform that I might potentially continue to use. This is because it lets users visualize data spatially in a clear, and interactive way. Not only this, but it also allows you to make patterns and through this, also makes relationships easier to see. You can also make different layers for different types of data, and can add things on top of the map to analyze how interactions in space might occur. In light of all of this, ArcGIS makes it easier to create accurate, representative maps that can be shared or used for research, planning, or any other map related project.

  1. Really interesting map you created, it is cool to see that you can make a map containing the common places you can be found! It is also cool to see that you enjoyed using ArcGIS and how it makes it easy to do everything you want it to do!
