Mapping Carleton: Lab Week 5

I chose a basic map of Carleton to add my five points. From the Carleton map I chose Burton(where I eat), Leighton(where on of my classes is), Boliou(where work is), West Gym(where I swim), and Davis(where my dorm is). I thought that having the option to use excel to input coordinates was very helpful and a great way to use data visualization. Here is the link to my data set.

When I got into the process of editing the points I thought it was amazing how many options there were to edit the points and make them visually appealing to the viewer. I chose to use pins as I thought this would make the most sense to the viewer. Finally, I drew the layout of the buildings on my map. This was a little bit tough, there were not exact shapes that fit any of my buildings so I used the polygon function. Using the polygon function requires you to trace out the building, this process worked but some of the lines were a little uneven. This is something I think that ARCGIS could improve on. There is a lot of potential for breaking down an area with this technology, my mind goes to hiking trails that are not easily accessible.

Here is a link to my final project.

  1. Interesting point on using ArcGIS for hiking trails! I was also considering what you can represent beyond building structures, and similarly, 3D things. The visual representation of your pins is a nice touch and a great size, as it makes it easier to find each spot. Moving forward, are there any additional variables you would want to represent on this map?

  2. While your map looks a little different when compared to mine, I like the approach you took. The 3D pins look great, and it seems you took more of a minimalist approach with the black/grey/white color selection. It is still very easy to follow, so I can’t complain. I also like your comment about using ArcGIS for mapping trails. I can definitely think of ways that could be beneficial to hikers or those interested in the layout of a certain area. Nice work!

  3. Austin, I found your map very interesting and creative. The pinpoints and shapes of the buildings gave me a clear idea of the layout. I liked your choices of buildings to follow and agreed that tracing the buildings was very tough. Was there a way you were thinking of incorporating the frequency of visits? I assume you are at West Gym quite a bit! Great work as always!

  4. I really like the precise outlining you did when bordering your buildings, which, along with the contrast with the white landscape, is really thoughtful when considering the visualization of the map and the points of interest. The map is simple and easy to see, which was nice. Lastly, I like your point about the mapping of trails. I think ARCGIS could help with that.
