Lab Week 4

When I took a look at the dataset I immediately noticed the columns of names and counts. I am assuming that it is telling us how many people have each specific name. I chose to use the website Rawgraphs for this assignment and originally I was planning to use a multi-set bar plot, however when setting the graph up I really did not like how close together the names were and I struggled to figure out how to separate them to make the graph look neat. Another thing that I wish the site had was a side bar chart which I remember from our talk with Lin is a good choice when you have a lot of variables you want to visualize. After going through quite a few other graphs that ended up not making sense for my goal of visualization. In the end I went with a circle packing graph. From the visualizations below you are able to see the changes I have made, the main being changing the color of the women’s names. Like we talked about with Lin, she mentioned in Digital Humanities the graphs we create should be nice to look at and easy to follow. Here by changing the color you are more clearly able to see the women’s names. I also made more separation between the circles so you can more clearly which names have the highest count. One thing that I would have liked to see in this would have been an option to create a legend so the viewers are able to easily see what the graph is trying to communicate. I would have rather done this project in R as I am a lot more familiar with it, but it was a fun and good experience to compare how these other websites compare to what I am familiar with.

  1. I like how you explained your process and why some chart types didn’t work before choosing circle packing. The color change for the women’s names definitely makes the visualization easier to read, and I agree that having a legend would help clarify things even more. It’s interesting to see how the tool influenced your final choice.

  2. I really like how you went about this assignment Briggs. I actually had the same thought process as you did. I remember line talking in class about the differences in effectiveness between the pie chart and the bar graph, I feel like you struck the right note here. I can clearly distinguish the size between each name and see with names are most popular along this time period. Nice work!

  3. I like the structure of this visualization. I was initially going to do something similar to this, but I had a hard time expressing the relationship in the data I was trying to show, so I scrapped it. The color changes are a nice change of detail to better show which of the names are girls and which are boys.
