I visualized my data using Rawgraphs.io. To effectively show trends over time, I chose to use a line chart. I began by mapping out the variables for the chart. Since my focus was on how names changed over the years, I designated the X-axis for the years and the Y-axis to represent the Count from the CSV file. I used lines to represent different names, with colors corresponding to the Count from the CSV, enabling me to observe trends for each name. Additionally, I included a series for Gender, which helped distinguish between boys’ names and girls’ names.
To improve the visualization’s clarity, I customized the presentation settings. I increased the width and height by 100, making the graph easier to read. I didn’t change the curve type because the bump curve was the only option that showed the small ups and downs. Also, each line was the same gray color, making the data hard to read. So I changed the color scheme to turbo discrete to present each line in different colors.
One problem was that some line labels overlapped with the x-axis, making them hard to read, as shown in the picture. I would like to know how to change the settings to prevent this.
While the original dataset just presents statistical values, the visualization allows viewers to recognize trends and changes across years, framing the data as cultural information rather than numbers.
